Guiding the international endeavor, Denmark and the Netherlands have taken the lead in training pilots and auxiliary personnel, aircraft maintenance, and overall support. Their joint efforts aim to enable Ukraine to independently operate F-16s in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken extended official correspondence to counterparts in Denmark and the Netherlands, confirming the approvals. “I am writing to express the United States’ full support for both the transfer of F-16 fighter aircraft to Ukraine and for the training of Ukrainian pilots by qualified F-16 instructors,” Blinken’s letter read, emphasizing Ukraine’s right to self-defense against Russian aggression.
Blinken further underscored that the approval would empower Ukraine to harness its new capabilities immediately after the initial batch of pilots completes their training. The move aligns with President Joe Biden’s endorsement of Ukrainian pilot training on F-16s, which includes both Denmark and the establishment of a training center in Romania.
Despite these developments, Ukrainian officials noted that the operational deployment of U.S.-built F-16s would not take place until next autumn and winter. Ukraine’s Air Force spokesperson, Yuriy Ihnat, confirmed this timeline and expressed awareness of the challenges posed by Russian air defense systems and contested airspace over Ukraine.
